Stay Focused: Sports Massage

Stay Focused was opened because people living an active and strenuous lifestyle need a massage therapist that is qualified and confident in treating them. My goal is for those athletes, that are in chronic or acute pain from the activities they partake in, is to experience the relief that lasts. Even if you are a rookie or a seasoned veteran, I want to get you back in the game as soon as possible.

Sports Massage FAQ

Have questions about our sports massage services? Want to learn about CBD massage, cupping therapy, or KinesioTaping? Hoping to treat your sciatica? Wondering about insurance or how frequently you should come in? Read below for our full massage FAQ.

  • What sort of injuries/pain does sports massage treat?

Our sports massage services treat a lot of soft tissue injuries/pain. The most common are rotator cuff issues, frozen shoulder, low back/hip pain, and sciatica.

  • What is cupping?

The type of cupping we do is with a small, plastic cup placed over the area to be treated, with a hand pump that removes the air from the cup, causing a vacuum suction on the tissue.

We do this over adhesions and areas of focus to help bring blood fresh blood supply and lymphatic fluid to the area to promote healing. It’s also a great way to help break up fascial restrictions over a muscle that may be causing issues.

The cups are left anywhere from 5-10 minutes and then released. Sometimes bruise-like patterns (I call them ‘octopus hickies’!) can occur. However, they usually go away within 7-10 days and are generally pain-free.

  • What is CBD massage?

CBD helps with relieving inflammation and pain in the muscles.

For CBD massage, I use products from BEE-OCH Organics, a local female-owned company, that uses broad-spectrum CBD, so it contains 0% THC.

It’s safe for my pro athletes, nurses, and government employees that get drug tested at work. I have a copy of her test results to confirm 0% THC, in office, for any clients that have questions.

I use a CBD oil over the whole body that contains approximately 50mg of CBD per pump. Then, I finish with a CBD menthol-infused sports rub, like a bio freeze, over a targeted area.

  • What is KinesioTaping?

KinesioTaping is a cotton tape with an adhesive back that is applied to the skin to help relieve pain and inflammation. Further, it helps provide support in the muscle, tendons, and ligaments. It allows the muscles to have a full range of motion, can be left on for multiple days, and is latex-free.

It can be used at the end of a session or as a stand-alone appointment.

  • What if I don’t feel comfortable getting undressed?

It’s all about communication. You will be instructed to undress to your comfort level, with ‘swimsuit’ areas always remaining covered. I ask if there are areas you don’t want worked, and I check in regarding pressure but also encourage you to let me know.

If there’s something I can do to help make you more comfortable or you’re worried about anything, I just need to know so we can talk about it. Everything in the room is adjustable, heat, lighting, what music we listen to, I just need to know.

  • How often should I get treatments?

On average, I say every 2-4 weeks, but it really depends on the issue/injury and what your goals are. Some clients come as often as every week. Generally, any longer than 4 weeks, and results aren’t going to be as long-term or beneficial as you’d like them to be.

  • What is the difference between sports massage and other kinds of massage?

At its base, sports massage is focused on pre-event, post-event, and maintenance massage.

Pre-event is designed to help warm up the muscle fibers and prepare the muscle for events; post-event is to help alleviate any issues and start relaxing the body for healing; maintenance is just that!

We do this through modalities that people are familiar with like deep tissue, Swedish, trigger point, etc. All these modalities get mixed together to provide the best possible outcome for clients.

Now I have more time than at an event to address real issues or injuries. Sometimes, the sessions are the most comfortable for the client if we’re dealing with injuries, but I never like to go above the ‘hurts so good’ threshold. “No pain, no gain,” isn’t totally true in massage…slight discomfort, yes.

  • How many sessions will I need?

It really just depends on what your goals are.

  • Does sports massage help with chronic pain?

    Yes, absolutely.

  • Do I have to be a professional athlete to benefit from a massage?

Not at all, many of our clients aren’t pro athletes. We enjoy pro/professional-amateur athletes because they (usually) take their bodies seriously, stay hydrated, get in when necessary, listen to their bodies, and do homework outside of the session. Really, this could be anybody, though!

Sports massage is designed to help with injuries and/or accidents that happen to the body, sometimes that happens because of lack of movement (like sitting all day) or constant repetitive movement (like manual work).
